Shadow Nation

“Two things,” Valerie said when she finally found Sasha. “Hanson’s alive and has a lead on Ethan, and we’re having an officer’s meeting tonight; I have no idea about what.”

Sasha looked up at her from the floor of the library, between two shelves of books. Valerie had scanned the library three times from the door, by this point, and hadn’t seen her. She didn’t know when Sasha had taken to camping out among the actual books.

“That’s three things,” Sasha said. “He’s okay? How do you know?”

“See, that’s the weird thing,” Valerie said. “He asked his mom to help him, and she came to the office today and told me, and then she left.”

“What?” Sasha asked, looking torn between listening to Valerie’s answer and continuing reading the page she had marked with her finger.

“Yeah,” Valerie said. “She came here, told me to stay put, then she left.”

“What?” Sasha asked again, glancing at the book and finally setting it aside. “Are you going to do it?”

That was not the reaction Valerie had been expecting.

“I was… yes, I was planning on it,” Valerie said slowly.

“Because Martha Cox showed up here and told you to,” Sasha said.

“Well, she did know the part about Hanson being out there looking for Ethan,” Valerie said. Was that true? Yes, she was pretty sure that Martha had brought up both parts of that without Valerie giving her any clues.

Sasha considered.

“How much incentive does she have to tell you the truth?” she asked. “I mean… I don’t trust her. At all. Not after she spent Hanson’s entire life using him to spy on you. She’s got no sense of right and wrong.”

Valerie considered that harder.

“If she’s still working with the Council, she wouldn’t interfere with something that gets Ethan back,” she said. “And she said that Hanson sent her. That was the only reason she was here.”

“Are you sure?” Sasha asked. “I just… Are you really sure?”

Valerie shook her head.

“I thought so. I need to… I have class in a few minutes, but… Do you want to come sit in on my class and then talk to me after? I… You’ve got me worried that she was lying to me, and I have no idea why she would show up here and do that.”

“Maybe she was telling the truth,” Sasha said. “I just don’t trust her at all, and if she came running in here and just told you the one thing and then ran off? It makes me all the more suspicious.”

“When did you get savvier at me at this stuff?” Valerie asked, and Sasha dipped her head, standing.

“I’m not,” she assured her. “I just really don’t like that woman. The way she used Hanson… I don’t like her at all.”

It bothered Valerie that Hanson had gone to her for help. Martha had been quite vague about that part, and Valerie was trying very hard to remember the specific words of the conversation, to make sure that Martha didn’t slip anything past her unnoticed.

“I want to be out there,” Valerie told Sasha as they walked.
